Tallinn Botanic Garden, Tallin

This garden contains a quite large Australian native plant collection apparently developed by a curator who lived in Australia for some time.

Sweden

Bergianska trädgârden, Stockholm

At the Bergianska trädgârden, Stockholm, you can see the flora from different areas around the world with a mediterrainean climate. One section is from Australia with eucalypts, Xanthorrhoea (an old specimen), grevilleas, billardiera, different wattles and many many more. The name of the greenhouse is Edvard Anderssons växthus.

United Kingdom

Chelsea Physic Garden , Chelsea, London

Situated in the heart of Chelsea, this unique Garden is a centre of education, beauty and relaxation. Of particular interest is the Sir Joseph Banks garden which includes any Australian plants discovered by Banks and Daniel Solander. There are also other Australian plants around the greenhouses.

The Gardens are at 66 Royal Hospital Road, Chelsea, SW3 4HS, London.

Pine Lodge Gardens, St Austell, Cornwall

This 12 ha estate, in its mild climate of mid-Cornwall, comprises several themed gardens within Pine Lodge garden. There is a wide range of some 5,500 plants, all of which are labelled. In addition to rhododendrons, magnolias and camellias, so familiar in Cornish gardens, there is a collection of Mediterranean and southern hemisphere plants, including the National Collection of grevilleas, as well as Callistemon, Banksia, Hakea, Hibbertia, Acacia, Olearia, Correa, Leptospermum, Kunzea, Myoporum and Prostanthera.

The gardens are open all year (except 24 to 26 December inclusive) from 10am - 6pm. Admission - adults, GBP 6.50, children, GBP 3.00.

Lamorran House Gardens, St Mawes, Cornwall, TR2 5BZ

A 2 hectare, south-facing Mediterranean garden overlooking the Bay of Falmouth. The collection of plants includes examples of the following: Callistemon, Melaleuca, Grevillea, Hibbertia, Banksia and Hakea as well as members of the Proteaceae from South Africa. The garden is open to the public on Wednesday and Friday during the spring and summer or by appointment. Contact: M.Brent, Garden Manager.

Tresco Abbey Gardens, Isles of Scilly

The Isles of Scilly are off the coast of Cornwall. The gardens feature a good selection of Australian plants among plants from other parts of the world.

United States of America

Australian Native Plants Nursery, Casitas Springs, California

Operated by expatriate Australian, Jo O'Connell, this nursery offers a good range of Australian native plants suited to Southern California. Many species can be seen growing in the gardens. Jo grows a good variety of the proteaceous genera, Hakea and Banksia, and also features the spectacular and unusual hybrid "Kangaroo Paws".

The nursery is located at 9040 North Ventura Ave, Casitas Springs, CA 93001 (6 miles north of Ventura on Highway 33 to Ojai) and is open by appointment.

Boyce Thompson Arboretum, Superior, Arizona

The Arboretum is located near the copper mining town of Superior, about a hour's drive east of Phoenix. Development was commenced in 1927 and the Arboretum is now a leader in the research of desert plants.

Given the arid environment, it is natural that cacti and succulent plants from low rainfall areas of North and South America should comprise outstanding collections in both natural settings and display beds. However, there is a remarkable collection of Australian trees and shrubs - Eremophila, Cassia, Callistemon, Melaleuca and many species of Eucalyptus including a giant River Red Gum that is listed on the US National Register of Big Trees. This tree is affectionately known as "Mr.Big".

A draft plan has been prepared for a 7.5 hectare "Australian Walkabout" exhibit. This will recreate eight plant communities representing the dry regions of Australia.

Huntington Botanical Gardens, San Marino, California

The Huntington Gardens are located at 1151 Oxford Rd., San Marino (about 15 miles NE of Los Angles). It consists of a library, art collection, and botanical gardens. There is also a bookstore with a horticultural stock, a cafe and tea room.

The gardens are laid out in theme areas: Palm, Japanese, Shakespeare, Rose, Camellia, Herb, Australian, Jungle, Desert (the oldest), and Subtropical. The Australian garden includes over 100 varieties of eucalyptus.

The Gardens are open from Tuesday to Friday (12 noon to 4.30pm) and on Saturday and Sunday from 10.30am to 4.30pm. Admission is by donation (US$7.50 requested).

International Centre for Earth Concerns, Ojai, California

Based in the Ojai (O-hi) Valley, the Centre's 276 acres has world-class botanical gardens (from Australia and South Africa), Southern California live oak groves, grassland and chaparral, outdoor and indoor meeting facilities. Details of the regular garden tours and special workshops can be obtained from the site.

Longwood Gardens, Kennett Square, Pennsylvania

Longwood offers 425 hectares of gardens, woodlands, and meadows; 20 outdoor gardens; 20 indoor gardens; 11,000 different types of plants, including a range from Australia; spectacular fountains and 800 horticultural and performing arts events each year, including flower shows, gardening demonstrations, courses, children’s programs, concerts, organ recitals, musical theatre, and fireworks displays. Longwood is open every day of the year from 9am.

Los Angeles State and County Arboretum, Arcadia, California

The Arboretum is located at 301 N. Baldwin Ave., Arcadia, (about 15 miles NE of Los Angeles, off 210 freeway (across Baldwin from the stables of Santa Anita Racetrack). It covers 127 acres.

Most of the Arboretum's plantings are geographically defined and include the Australian, African, Mediterranean, Southwestern, South American, and Asiatic/North American sections. Taxonomic collections include Acacia, Cassia, Eucalyptus, Leptospermum, Melaleuca and Senna. The grounds are part of the original Rancho Santa Anita and include several historical structures such as a restored 1839 adobe.

The Arboretum is open from 9.00am to 4.30pm daily, except Christmas Day and admission is $5.00 for adults (concession for seniors and children).

San Diego Wild Animal Park, California

A feature here is the "Australian Rain Forest" garden which provides a cool, moist environment as a contrast to other areas of the Park which include the California Native Plants Garden and the large Aloe and Baja gardens.

Entrance fee is about US$15 and the Park is about 35 miles north of the airport.

Santa Cruz Arboretum, University of California

Perhaps the most unique Mediterranean garden in the greater San Francisco Bay area with one of the largest collections of Australian plants outside of Australia. Within the 50 acres are large collections of Acacia, Banksia, Correa, Grevillea and Hibbertia. Collections of plants from New Zealand, Chile, New Caledonia, South Africa and California can also be found here. Recently additions include a new library, meeting room and gift/plant shop. Lectures, classes and plant sales offer a wide range of plants from the collections.

Strybing Arboretum, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, California

This Park features mostly woody species organised by geographic area and is located amongst the planted sand dunes of Golden Gate Park. It covers about 40 acres. Among the significant collections are Californian natives, fragrance garden, Magnolias, a primitive plant walk, Cape Province plants, Australian plants, Asian plants, South American plants, redwood forest and New World rainforest plants.

The Helen Crocker Russell Library which is located just inside the main entrance is the most complete horticultural library in northern California. The Park features many talks and classes and conducts several plant sales annually. There is also a small but well stocked gift shop.

University of California Botanical Garden, California

This Garden is organised geographically, and is excellent for Mediterranean plants. There are over 13000 different taxa (species and subspecies) from all over the world planted out on 34 acres. Of special note are collections of plants from California, Asia, South Africa, New Zealand/Australia, South America, North America, New World Desert, Mesoamerican and a collection of old roses, economic plants and Chinese medicinal herbs. The Australian/New Zealand section includes Eucalyptus, proteaceae, and podocarps and several distinctive groups found only in the Southern Hemisphere are well represented.

Classes and talks are held monthly and a small gift shop has a significant selection of books. Plant sales are held in Spring and Autumn.

The Garden is open every day except Christmas from 9.00am to 4.45pm. The Visitor Center is open from 10.00am to 4.00pm weekdays and from 11.00am to 4.00pm weekends.
