The Arboretum is located near the copper mining town of Superior, about a hour's drive east of Phoenix. Development was commenced in 1927 and the Arboretum is now a leader in the research of desert plants.

Given the arid environment, it is natural that cacti and succulent plants from low rainfall areas of North and South America should comprise outstanding collections in both natural settings and display beds. However, there is a remarkable collection of Australian trees and shrubs - Eremophila, Cassia, Callistemon, Melaleuca and many species of Eucalyptus including a giant River Red Gum that is listed on the US National Register of Big Trees.
